I’ve got some of this wrong – the shots don’t line up properly – Pinkguy switching which side he is laying on! oops…

The fade to black transition for the close up of the big green head to the elevator – the big green head could move down off the bottom of the screen, as if leading the Pinkguy who follows in the elevator. This would work better in my opinion because it has that extra symbolism of the big green head playing the pied piper and hypnotising Pinkguy into going to the arena fights.

*The crossed things and the nun are just filler logos for now – they are just meant to signify that the logo should be there. There should also be some gibberish written there as well – which if we could read would say something like:

“Hurry to your local fight club!”

“It’s time to go!”

A shot of paradise should fit in between these two frames – after Pinkguy close up of his reflection – he closes his eyes and paradise comes into focus. Then a quick flash of the big green head.

The camera could pan around his body as the lights are flashing and reveal the finished mask look.

5 and 6 are out of order. Although they could come after one another. And I don’t think we need to see Pinkguy actually go inside, he could just be heading in that direction – the audience would think he was heading inside. And then see him inside and would assume.

I don’t know how I managed it but I completely forgot about the shots that show an audience watching the fight. So I need to make sure I add them into the storyboard and work out the sort of shots I want to do for that.

I think because there are already so many shots – I should try to get this point across with as few shots as possible – and if I have time add more. The pull back to a TV and an audience watching from the last storyboard I produced for this film is a definite, with some mid-shots of Pinkguy’s from the audience enjoying the fight.

I think there should be another shot of the green head guy flash up and paradise and glitch.

The credits could roll over a slow pull back of the city from the building Pinkguy is supposed to be in. We see all the lights from all the windows of all the buildings and are reminded just how huge this system is and the scale of these terrible circumstances.

Pinkguys!

I played around with some different designs for Pinkguy in Illustrator. Different shapes, colours, arm lengths, etc…

I have highlighted the stuff I like on these yellowguys, and used two ticks to highlight stuff I really like.

I actually really like the Pinkguys with yellow eyes and pink pupils. I think they are probably more expressive than the ones with just yellow eyes. Although I really like both styles, and the ones without have a sort of dead-eyed look which works with the hypnotised/brainwashed thing going on in the story.

I’m not sure which i prefer, the longer body or the shorter one. But I think I like the rounder bodies more.

An outline, dark or light, or the arms could be a different colour?  I’m not sure which way I prefer. The above picture was just an early quick concept sketch, and based on it I think an outline works fine.

Low-poly geometric city!

This render demonstrates a little bit how the sunlight doesn’t reach the ground level, so it can be daylight but it looks as if it’s nighttime on the ground, and for most of the buildings occupants they don’t get sunlight on their windows either (except for a very short time in the day perhaps). At midday, when the sun is directly overhead, the ground may get some sunlight – but it wouldn’t last long. So for the residents of this place they don’t get much sunlight at all, and live in a very dark world. This mirrors the population, who are mistreated – the world isn’t just actually dark, its also dark and gloomy for them in others ways. They live in tough conditions and live tough lives. We don’t see them as children – so we don’t have any reference as an audience for how the whole system really works – we just know that they get used for dangerous violent games by others. It’s dark! It’s unpleasant, and not ideal – like living in the dark most of your life. They are also unaware of the grand scheme of the world – and are therefore figuratively living in the dark!

CITY CONCEPT ART

This was just a quick concept sketch I made Pinkguys city. The tall skyscrapers with individual radio towers and many windows. I had them overlapping at the back, and not all lights on – but I think all the lights should probably be on – and give the idea that the population don’t have any control over the lighting.

Arena location

The arena should be a place which feels a bit unnatural – perhaps a connection with the clean/grid room. I like the idea of it being white – a bit futuristic in some ways. It should have some screens and a line dividing it into two sections for each fighter. I also included a drain in the floor to wash away the blood after each fight.

I’m not sure if i want the arena to be dirty at all. In some ways it would make some sense because it is a killing floor – and blood is regularly spilled there – but on the other hand it could be eerily clean, because it is so efficiently cleaned after each fight (because blood is regularly spilled there and they planned for that). The city that the arena is in, and that Pinkguy comes from is really

Tank Concept

TANK CONCEPT ART

I want to have tanks rolling around – autonomous tanks with lots of guns! At least I think there should be some as a presence at the arena. These were just quick designs I made at some point, and are absolutely subject to change. I like the top one more than the bottom one – it’s wider, and the guns are attached to the middle. I like that they fire in both directions at the same time if necessary – I want to expand on that idea and have multiple guns on swivelling, rotating middles that can if they want aim at the same target or target many different ones.

I’m not sure how to get the idea across that they are autonomous. Perhaps that will just have to be unknown to the audience.

 


 

So i’ve been bouncing my idea off various people and seeing what questions come back my way. There’s been some really interesting feedback which i want to go over, as there are some minor changes I want to make to the final film.

Q: What happens to the dead guy?

A: This is something i just kind of glossed over. I figured it wasn’t really an important aspect of the story and could be ignored – they’re dead i thought, who cares. But now I think it’s something that i should address. So what does happen to the dead body after Pinkguy leaves the arena. I assumed it was disposed of and the audience would have assumed that too. Perhaps the body would become food for a giant monster, or better yet, it could be made into the food they feed to the other Pinkguys. Then i thought about how my film is about a video game, of sorts, and how the Pinkguys are utilised as game characters. So why not have them respawn! Initially i was against this idea because I wanted there to be real terrifying consequences to these violent games. But perhaps if the corpse are reanimated and brought back to carry on the cycle it is just as effective. It fits in nicely with the gaming idea, and could still be just as dark – the Pinkguy’s are still manipulated and die, they just get brought back to life with advanced technology – and have to repeat the cycle (not until death as before but) forever!

Q: Would it be more effective to show the city at the beginning or the end of the film?

A: This is a question I had been thinking about myself. I had sort of shoehorned the city in at the beginning but knew it could go either way. It either sets up the film, or it reveals the vast size of the issue at the end. I think the end could be more effective having the city revealed at the end.

Q: Would it be more effective if Pinkguy isn’t selected and has to wait around until he is summoned?

A: Basically should Pinkguy be delayed? Maybe they could all have individual numbers, or symbols and they await selection, stuck in a sort of limbo until they are chosen – and they think that being chosen is the best. I think this particular query was probably in how i was explaining the brainwashing aspect, and the system being a bit ambiguous for the audience. But it’s something to think about, and wouldnt take much more animating to change. It would just show a routine. Pinkguy waking up and becoming enthralled by the tv and awaiting his moment. I think it is something that could make the whole thing more effective – rather than him being selected immediately (which shows they are watching and waiting for him to wake so he can be selected again) he waits and waits and time passes and he isn’t selected and then when he is we see it is different and he leaves. I almost already have that, but perhaps it could be enhanced and made more clear to the audience. It was originally a sort of unlucky lottery, but now the system is just built to ensure they all fight continuously until their demise.

So. If the loser is brought back to life then how does the winner make their way home? Is there any point in a return train, or should he be killed off backstage and brought back like the dead guy? Maybe he just continues fighting until he loses right there. I don’t think he should be killed off, because i want the loser being brought back to life to be a big deal – and the winner to just be used again and again until death. I guess he should think he is going to paradise but end up in another fight, and then lose, and end up back at the beginning – but that means animating two fights. Which is fine, but I have to make sure both fights are different enough to be interesting – I guess it works because there are normally two rounds of arcade matches – so it fits with that theme quite well.

If Pinkguy is going to come back to life, how is he going to do it? Maybe some kind of injection? A modern surgery with lasers or some huge vacuum that sucks him up and fixes him in transit back to the room? My favourite idea for this is dematerialising and rematerializing back in his room. The Pinkguys are sort of beamed up (like star trek) and almost magically fixed in transit. There could be some kind of identifying factor to each individual Pinkguy – like a barcode, symbol or number which identifies each one to their individual room. This makes them seem more and more like unreal gaming assets waiting for real world players to spawn in as – but I think the audience will still think they’re real if they react horrified to the gore and show emotions and the brainwashing with paradise stuff should send it over the edge from thinking they’re not real – just in a representation of a computer – of course it could be something that is up for debate!
